In our recent School of Leather series, we discussed the best waterproofers for specific situations, but we have recently become devoted users of a natural, all-in-one product that's ideal for the coming winter weather. First introduced in McMinnville, Oregon back in the 1920s, Huberd's Shoe Grease (made from pine tar, beeswax and paraffin) conditions and protects the leather while retaining its breathability. The thick pomade-like texture makes for and easy application and the natural woodsy scent is an added benefit. While it does enrich the leather's finish, it won't significantly darken the color. Use it to revitalize older leathers and rub it into new leathers to soften and protect. And it's good for more than just shoes—it will also condition and preserve your bags, jackets and car upholstery.
