Old School

Question
I'll be a senior in high school in August, but my style's more of a 1960s Ivy Leaguer. While most of the girls appreciate it, some guys call me "gay," just because I don't wear ballooning button-downs or Nikes everyday. My brother says I should just conform, but he needs Valet more than I do. All I want to do is show up in a bow tie on the first day of school. - Nick, Oak Brook, IL
Answer

It takes bravery to be an individual in high school, young man. And know that you're well on your way to a fulfilling life. Ask any successful, wealthy, creative type and they'll tell you that they didn't fit in at school. Enjoy the attention from the ladies and take solace in the fact that in five years, those small-minded schlubs will likely still be wearing the same billowing shirts.  As for the first day of school, we mentioned you to tie designer David Hart, and he's sending you out one of his bow ties from his upcoming spring 2010 collection—a new style cut from Thomas Mason shirting. Wear it proudly and others are sure to follow. It's one small knot for a senior, but a giant leap for the senior class.
